ABOUT ROBERT GOLDEN

Robert holds a BA in Modern European History and a BS in Design from the University of Michigan and studied at the London School of Film Technique.

He has produced photo stories for major publications, covers for publishers like Penguin and Heinemann, and created the award winning PEOPLE WORKING SERIES of children’s books. As a filmmaker, he has written/directed 40 documentaries, two feature films, and over 900 hundred TV commercials, earning numerous awards. His extensive writing includes plays, scripts, novels, poetry, and essays on photography, politics, and culture.

With years of global experience documenting societies, Robert now teaches young people about democracy and visual storytelling across Europe, especially with UK, Bosnian and Ukrainian youth.

His literary works include A FORGETTABLE MAN, collections of essays on the arts, and the book TRANSIENT LIGHT, FLEETING TIME, now used in Ukraine, to instruct students about photography.

He wrote and directed the documentary THIS GOOD EARTH, distributed internationally, and recently completed new films, including BELONGING/BECOMING and a documentary on Ukrainian youth.

As former Chairman of the Association of Photographers, he established Britain’s leading photography awards and mentored prominent photographers such as Fay Godwin and Robin Broadbent. His photographs have been exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Photographer’s Gallery, The Serpentine, the Barbican, and others across the UK and abroad. Robert continues to develop educational content and lecture on photography and his filmmaking.

Presently he is making a series of 12 illustrated video discussions about photography called THINKING PHOTOGRAPHY and he is teaching a course on photographic storytelling in conjunction with a Ukrainian university, soon to be made available more widely. He has been invited to deliver lectures and provide insights into photography and film making by Weymouth Arts Collage, Dorset as well as having worked on projects with Leeds University, Kings Collage London, Bournemouth University, Sarajevo University of Science and Technology, and the Ukraine Catholic University.

WHY PHOTOGRAPHY:MAKING MEANING

If you look at my work or read my essays or take this course, you will come to understand that early on, I discovered three missions for my life. The first was to give a voice for those who have no voice in history. The second was to attempt to make the invisible forces in our lives to be made visible through using metaphor. The third was to attempt to find a visual photographic literacy of poetic beauty. Combining those things with helping often but not exclusively young people (especially those who have seen the horrors of mistreatment or wars) to discover their deepest concerns and to transform them into visible shareable images is a balm for my soul.
